Output from an ileostomy is loose and near-continuous, often several hundred millilitres a day, and it contains digestive enzymes. Those enzymes are why a leak that would be a nuisance with a colostomy can strip the skin within hours here. A drainable pouch is emptied several times a day without touching the barrier, which is both quicker and far kinder to the skin than repeatedly changing a closed pouch.

Hollister drainable pouches come in 45, 55 and 70 mm in beige and transparent; HDL-Hendry drainable pouches come in 50, 60 and 70 mm, with a transparent front panel at 70 mm. Both use a lock-and-roll closure, so there is no clip.

Barrier choice matters more here than with any other stoma type. Start flat if the stoma protrudes and the skin is even. If output is getting under the wafer, add a barrier ring before considering anything else — and if the stoma is flush or retracted, a convex barrier with a belt is the usual answer.

Empty at about a third full. This matters more with an ileostomy than with any other stoma: output is watery and heavy, and a full pouch drags on the barrier edge, which is the most common reason a wafer that should last days fails in hours.

A lubricating deodorant inside the pouch makes emptying quicker and cleaner, because output slides down the film rather than clinging to it. With liquid output emptied five or six times a day, that is not a small convenience.

One thing worth knowing that is not about products at all: people with an ileostomy lose more fluid and salt than they expect, and dehydration is the most common reason for readmission after ileostomy surgery. If output rises sharply, or you feel unusually thirsty, tired or light-headed, that is a conversation to have with your medical team promptly.
