Paste is applied in a thin bead around the stoma opening or directly into the dip you are trying to fill, then the barrier is placed over it. It is not an adhesive — the barrier still does the sticking. Using too much is the most common mistake and can actually reduce wear time.
Because it contains alcohol, paste can sting on broken skin. If the skin around your stoma is sore or weeping, stoma powder first and paste afterwards is usually more comfortable — or a barrier ring instead, which is alcohol-free.
A thin bead is enough. Paste fills gaps; it does not hold the barrier on, and a thick layer can lift the wafer rather than seal it.
It can on broken or raw skin, because it contains alcohol. On intact skin most people feel nothing. A barrier ring is the alcohol-free alternative.
Paste suits a narrow crevice or a single dip. A ring suits a whole uneven area around the stoma and is usually cleaner to remove. Most patients settle on one or the other.
