A barrier ring is used when the skin immediately around the stoma is not perfectly flat — a scar, a dip, a crease or a stoma that sits slightly below skin level. The ring is stretched to the width of the stoma, placed directly on the skin around it, then the skin barrier is applied over the top.
Rings and paste do a similar job in different ways. Paste is squeezed into a gap and works well for narrow, awkward crevices; a ring is placed as one piece, is easier to reposition before it settles, and usually comes off more cleanly. Many patients use a ring routinely and keep paste for the occasional stubborn spot.
If leakage is happening repeatedly in the same place, that is normally a fitting problem rather than a product problem. Send us a photo of the barrier after you remove it — where it has eroded tells us a great deal about what to change.
Not usually. Both fill gaps between the skin and the barrier, and most patients find one or the other is enough. A ring is often preferred where the whole area around the stoma is uneven; paste suits a single narrow crevice.
Rings are designed to be stretched and moulded by hand rather than cut. Stretching keeps the ring in one piece, which gives a more continuous seal.
Yes. A barrier ring sits on the skin under the barrier, so it is independent of the flange system and works with both ranges.
