If output is getting under the barrier, the skin around your stoma is probably not flat. A barrier ring or stoma paste fills those dips so the wafer has something continuous to seal against.

If the skin is red, sore or weeping, the priority is a dry surface to stick to. Stoma powder absorbs moisture; a skin protective wipe over the top builds a thin protective layer. Together they are known as the crusting technique.

If removal hurts or the skin looks stripped, an adhesive remover spray or wipe is the answer. Peeling a barrier off dry, twice a week for years, is one of the most common causes of long-term peristomal damage — and one of the easiest to fix.

If the pouch feels insecure, is heavy, or a convex barrier is lifting at the edges, an ostomy belt gives steady support. And if emptying is slow or odour is a worry, a lubricating deodorant inside the pouch handles both.

It is easy to end up buying a ring, a paste, a powder and a spray at once. In practice most people settle on two: something to fill the gaps and something to make removal gentle. The rest are for specific situations.
