Urine is harder on peristomal skin than stool, and the damage happens quietly — a red ring around the stoma that appears over weeks rather than hours. The anti-reflux design inside a urostomy pouch keeps collected urine in the lower part of the bag so it cannot wash back against the stoma when you lie down or bend forward.

The tap at the base replaces the roll closure of a drainable pouch. Emptying at a toilet takes seconds, and it should be done at around a third full — urine is heavy, and a full pouch pulls on the barrier more than most people expect.

Cut the barrier opening closer to the stoma than you would for a colostomy. Any skin left exposed will be in contact with urine, and a persistent red ring around the stoma almost always means the opening is too large rather than that the product is wrong.

A skin protective wipe under the barrier gives an extra layer between urine and skin, and is worth using routinely rather than only when there is a problem. Barrier rings help where the skin around the stoma is uneven.

Rinse night drainage tubing daily and change the drainage bag as advised. Cloudy urine, an unusual smell or crystal deposits around the stoma are worth mentioning to your stoma nurse or doctor rather than treating as normal.
